A .net domain name can be used and registered by anyone.
Legal requirements
No special requirements. Anyone can register a .net domain name.
Technical requirements
No special requirements.
Naming conventions
All letters (a-z) and numbers (0-9) are allowed; hyphens (-) are also allowed, however not at the beginning or at the end of the domain name. A domain name should be between 3 and 63 characters long.
.net domain names transfers to UniNames are possible. The transfer itself for a .net domain name is free, but an additional year will be charged. This means that the current expiration date will be extended with 1 additional year.
E.g. You registered the domain name yourcompany.net on the 12th of September 2003. If you transfer this domain name to UniNames on the 20th of June 2004, you will have to pay the annual fee. The next renewal date will be on 12th September 2005.
Procedure
.net transfers to UniNames can be requested by sending a transfer request through our website.
The current domain owner will receive an e-mail with the next steps to approve the transfer.
After following the steps to approve the transfer and acceptance by the current registrar, the domain will be transferred to UniNames.
Additional conditions
Ensure that your domain does not have a lock status (REGISTRAR-LOCK or HOLD). If the domain is locked, then the owner should request his current registrar to unlock it.
Make sure that the email-address of the Admin Contact is active. Normally a period of 3 to 4 days will be granted to approve the transfer request. If not, the transfer request will be cancelled automatically. If the admin contact’s e-mail is not active you should ask your current registrar to correct the admin contact’s e-mail address.
The transfer should be initiated some time before the domain name expires. This to avoid that the transfer request is still being processed when the domain has passed its expiration date. If this happens the owner is responsible for the payment of possible fees that may be charged by the current registrar.
Please ensure that the domain is older than 60 days. Otherwise the transfer request will be declined.

Updates can be done by any UniNames account having edit permissions on the domain name.
The billing contact of the domain name will automatically receive an invoice to renew the domain name. If the invoice is paid before the domain name expires, the domain name will be renewed.
Note the importance of correct billing information!
If not paid by the domain name expiration date:
a grace period of 40 days is started for the domain name.
grace period is followed by a redemption period (30 days)
If the owner or the billing contact asks us to let the domain name expire:
the domain owner will be notified by e-mail
the domain billing contact will be notified by e-mail
the accounts with permissions on the domain name will be notified by e-mail
A grace period of 40 days is started, followed by a redemption period of 30 days and deletion. When a domain name is in grace or redemption period you remain the owner, but the domain name is inactive.
Reactivation
Expired domain names can be reactivated as long as they are in grace or in redemption period.
Expiration date
A .net domain name that has passed his expiration date will be deactivated. This means that all services (website, e-mail...) linked to this domain will stop working.
Grace period
The grace period lasts about 40 days. In this period the domain name is not active and may still be renewed through the current registrar without paying any additional fees.
Redemtion period
After the domain name grace period has passed, the domain name will enter the domain name redemption period. During this period, which lasts approximately 30 days, the “whois” information will be deleted. The domain can still be renewed, but an additional fee of 125 USD has to be paid. This process may take several days
Deletion
Five days after the redemption period, the domain name will be permanently deleted and will be made available again for registration.
